Vinegar Eels

'Can't remember where I got my starter culture, but I think it was from someone on aquabid..

Anyhow, yet another super easy culture for your baby fish.

In a glass container (I use a 1 gallon glass bottle) mix equal parts of apple cider vinegar, to water. Slice and dice up an apple and drop into bottle. Add starter culture. Cap with some sort of breathable material, i.e. cloth or paper towels with rubber band.
Best kept in a cool and unlit area.

I have had eels in the same culture for 4 months with no problems of rotting, mold, or any thing else that is nasty.
Occasionally (monthly) I add fresh bits of apple and also start a new culture in another gallon jug.
I like to make sure that I always have them on hand. I write the date on the bottle so I know how old the culture is.

HARVESTING:
Prepare a coffee filter in a funnel.

Use a baster to pull the eels and media (vinegar) from the bottle.

Place the funnel back into the bottle that you pulled the eels from. This will help keeping the media from having to be replaced.
Dump the eels from the baster into the funnel.
After the vinegar has drained from the funnel, remove funnel from bottle and run cool
water a couple of times through the funnel (you will lose some eels through the filter but don't worry, there is plenty still in the filter to feed your fry).

After the fresh water has drained from the funnel, remove filter, turn the filter inside out and swish the filter in a glass container. Now you can easily use a pipette to pull the eels from the water and feed your fish.
